We first thought of Puzzleland in August 2010, it started of as a sketch on a Pad (thanks Nicki) and we developed the idea from there.

After playing a number of other puzzle games on the iPad, we discovered that few of them (if any) really made any real use of the iPad. We started drawing some pictures that would later become the basis for Puzzle Land game play:

We later realized that working with simple characters and shapes like this would be extremely limited. We went back to the drawing board and started to think about what we could do with a full screen playing environment and how we might use it with a puzzle game. We also began testing concepts with Jude’s son Harry (3 and a half) who is now Puzzle Land’s biggest fan. It turns out that 3 year olds (and even 2 year olds) can finish reasonably complex puzzles after a few minutes practice.
With this in mind, we started creating Puzzle Land with the help of a very talented Australian illustrator. The first concepts for Puzzle Land aren’t vastly different to the finished product in the app store…

The final artwork:

We began creating themes for each Puzzle “Land” and for for the characters and animals that would make up the game. We also started working on the game mechanics, creating Flash versions of the Puzzle box and puzzle screens for our developers to work from. There are few sketches below that outline some of our original ideas.
Woodland Wonders

Intergalactic Adventures

After a few months, we had all the finished artwork, and we were ready to start making our game. As far as games go, this is a relatively simple one, but the resources started to pile up. Especially as each Puzzle becomes more and more difficult as you advance through each Puzzle land (initial puzzles have around 7 pieces, while the puzzles on level 5 have 25+ pieces… perfect for little experts!).

Our developers spent a lot of time tinkering with the “Puzzle Box” – a cornerstone of game play in Puzzle land. How long should the box stay open for once you take out a piece? should it be transparent? how do we maximize playing space while making play as realistic as possible? Do we need a puzzle box? Turns out we did, and the end result (after hours of testing with all sorts of audiences) is some thing that we think works really well.

We believe it’s the most realistic puzzle game play on the iPad to date – you can try the app for free and let us know what you think. If you have any suggestions, please let us know because we are committed to making our games better and we truly value your feedback.
The first 2 levels (10 puzzles) come free, and if you like the game, you can buy the rest of Puzzle Land for just a few bucks. There are 25 great puzzles across 5 lands Critter Corner, Garden Goodies, Big Blue Sea, Woodland Wonders and Intergalactic Adventures – all with interactive and lovable characters…

Each level also contains neat little animations – a reward at the end of each puzzle that will bring a smile to any child’s face. Your child won’t just be learning, they’ll also be having fun. Playing puzzles will (or should) improve visual perception as well as fine motor skills – Each puzzle is slightly harder than the previous – and you can also adjust the settings to make play harder or easier.

Try it out today and let us know what you think!
