Did you know you can easily turn your iBooks Notes into handy Study Cards? The iPad features a bunch of amazing built in tools that really set the device apart for use in classroom or for any type of study.

Many features (like this one) aren’t immediately apparent – Notes to study cards is a great example of extending a simple idea with some practical thinking and working it into a feature that is both elegant and useful.

This short tutorial explains how you can easily make your own study cards from any iBook. With the latest version of iBooks any book content you highlight can be automatically be converted into a study card to be used later…

1. Highlight your chosen text (tap and hold as you would with any other text selection)

2. Tap the highlighted text to display options and click on the notepad icon

3. Type text into the popup field

4. Lightly tap the status/title bar at the top of the screen to display iBooks options and select the notepad icon

6. Select “Study Cards”. On one side of the Study Card is a glossary term or highlighted text (image 1 below). On the other side is the definition of the glossary term or note that corresponds to the highlighted text (image 2 – below)

7. To flip the card over, simply tap anywhere on the Study Card, or on the circular arrows in the bottom right-hand corner.

Thanks for installing and trying Math Champ in your classroom. If you are having problems, please review this guide before contacting our support desk:

If you haven’t done so already, please check out the video tour below to see how Math Champ works:

Choosing a service type

To play Math Champ you need the SERVER or HOST app and one or more students who have the Client installed on their iPad or iPhone. All devices need to have an active connection on the same WI-FI network OR have Bluetooth enabled:

Settings > General > Bluetooth > ON

When you first start the HOST you will have the option of selecting either Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Wi-Fi is faster and is recommended for larger classes where all of the devices are configured to access the same network. Bluetooth is a more reliable option and provides an option for classrooms that are not Wi-Fi enabled… although it can be slower when more than 10 players are connected. Experiment with both options and see which works best for your class.

Problems connecting: if you are having problems connecting try restarting the the HOST which will republish a network service. Ask students who are having problems connecting to tap on the “REFRESH” button on the “connect to host” screen on the CLIENT. IF they are still having trouble connecting, ask them to close the app from the system tray (close, double tap the home button, hold then minimize the app icon) and then restart and try to connect to the HOST again.

TIP: to avoid any connection problems, it’s a good idea to make sure all apps are closed, including the Math Champ Client before distributing devices to your class. Load the Math Champ HOST app just before you instruct your students to proceed with opening the CLIENT application.

Getting started

Before you begin play, the teachers should take a few seconds to configure the types of quiz content available to your class (using the HOST app). In settings, tap “Quizzes” and then toggle the Quiz Sets that you want to play ON or OFF (When play begins it will take a random selection of questions from the “quiz pool” and make a unique quiz every time you play).

Individual questions can also be turned on and off from the settings area – tap on any quiz set to edit the available questions – pictured below:

Class list management

Before using Math Champ in the classroom for the first time – you’ll need to create a class and add your class list to it. We recommend doing this ahead of time for each of the classes you intend to use Math Champ with.

This can be done in the settings area and takes just a few minutes:

Tap Settings > Enter Pin (Optional) > Classes > Add a New Class

After adding and then naming your class, you can tap on the right arrow and then start adding your students to the class.

If students are away on a particular day, you can easily toggle them on or off before play begins. When you’ve finished adding your class list information, you can toggle the active class to ON in the settings area (only one class can be active at a time).

Make sure your class is connected

There are other settings available, but this is all that is required to start play. Before a game gets underway, you need to make sure all your students are connected.

On the top right hand corner of the home screen on the HOST, you can see 2 icons. The first icon shows how many students are currently connected (using the Math Champ CLIENT) and the 2nd icon shows that you have an active WI-FI connection (this will change to a blue color if you are using Bluetooth).

Tap the player icon to see which students are connected:

Connecting to the Quiz (CLIENT)

Students who have the Math Champ CLIENT installed will be able to view any active classes configured on the HOST.
NOTE: We have designed the app so that only one class can be active at any time to avoid complications in the classroom.

NOTE: If there are any problems connecting, or if the active class isn’t visible, students can tap refresh to refresh the server list. If this doesn’t work, please try restarting the application (described above under Choosing a service type).

Selecting an Avatar

To make Math Champ more fun for kids of all ages, there are a number of colorful avatars to select from that will be used in play – on the Math Champ CLIENT, after connecting to a class, each student can select a unique avatar to represent them in the Math Champ Arena….

Starting play

When your class is ready to roll, tap on “Start Quiz” – NOTE: If you have a HDMI cable (for use with an interactive whiteboard) or Apple TV, you can also enhance play by using an external display to show the Math Champ “Leader Board” during play. The use of the 2nd display is something we would like to improve in future versions of Math Champ – please let us know if you have any suggestions!

On the Math Champ CLIENT, students will receive a count down and then play will begin….

Example question from actual gameplay on an iPhone

Gameplay

Each question has a set amount of time to be answered and each correct answer also earns a point of each player. Optionally, there are bonus points for the fastest answer, and/or the first person to answer 5 questions in a row (configurable under settings)

Bonus points (as an option) give each quiz another dimension

Bonus points are awarded in the bottom of the playing area and provide a great feedback loop and incentive to jump in first, or to try and get as many answer in a row correct before any other player. If you are using a display to show the Math Champ Leaderboard, students will also be able to see who is first to answer and also who is in the lead.
All questions are multiple choice at this stage, but we plan to provide different game formats for Math Champ in future builds. Games contain either 30,60 or 90 questions (configurable in the Settings area).

The Math Champ

When the quiz is complete, the leading scorer is declared as the Math Champ. The player who is declared as the Math Champ will retain the “winner’s belt” until someone can take it from them….

Valuable metrics

While Math Champ is loads of fun for kids of all ages, teachers can also access valuable student metrics in the class list area, and the host will keep a record of results for all players for every quiz they complete. This data can be easily emailed and exported to a CSV file.

Settings > Select Class > Select Student > Email CSV

Less than on 20 minutes after our 2012 Design Update for the iPhone version of Flashcards (now “Kids Flashcards +”) was live in the App Store, we received our first email complaining about the ‘missing’ categories, one of customers informed us that “If I don’t get the other categories I’m gonna have to delete your app and give it a bad review”.

We can understand this customer’s disappointment and frustration - If you have a few seconds, we’d also like to explain why the categories are ‘missing’.

Existing users who had our “free” app, now have a the same free version that our new users will install. This wasn’t an easy decision for us and we anticipated some not so thrilling reviews – but this is a FREE application…. If you don’t like the application, you can remove it from your iPhone.

The latest update included design over haul. As part of this process, we’ve also removed the banner ads because it created a poor user experience for children trying to learn their first words. This is inline with Apple’s move to pull iAds from Children’s apps.

As part of our latest update, we fixed iOS5 bugs and updated the artwork for the entire app

We would like to continue building the application into a superb learning tool for children (which we think it is), and we can’t do that without making some money so we can eat, feed our kids and pay the bills.

The Ads were the only way that we made money out of this application as less than 2% of users have paid to “upgrade” the application (out of more than 100,000 downloads, we’ve made less than $1500 from sales of this application to date). We have not come close to covering our outlay, let alone the man hours we’ve put into this project. We hope that you might stop to consider our side of the equation…

So before you jump into the App Store to give us not so favorable rating, keep in mind that we will be using the proceeds of your purchase to continue to improve our Flashcard application. Some updates we are going to be working on this year include Dropbox integration, a custom flashcard creation tool and additional languages (Dutch, Swedish, and Brazilian Portuguese), as well as Australian and U.K. language options.
The next version will include an extension pack with over 100 new flashcards.

For a couple of bucks, you will have access to all of these future updates for the life of the application. We think that’s a pretty fair deal.

If you’ve recently updated an application, or have had to delete an application and then reinstall it – or if changed devices (with the same user id) – or for any other reason you’ve been prompted to purchase something you’ve already been charged for by iTunes, the solution is simple. You can just buy it again. You won’t be charged twice for something you’ve already purchased if you are using the same Apple ID.

A number of our apps use in-app purchases. Generally if you’re upgrading (and you already have purchased something), our application will “detect” your purchases and you will not have to “restore them”. If this doesn’t happen automatically, you can “restore purchases” (Flashcards) or for all other apps (Futaba Word Games, Puzzle Land, Alphabet Blocks), please just make the same purchase as you did previously. It will prompt you to purchase the item again. After you tap purchase, iTunes will detect that you’ve already purchased the item and you’ll then be able to download it for free.

You should see something like this on your screen:

If this doesn’t happen, and you’ve been charged for the same exact item, please contact iTunes. We are unable to issue refunds and can not view your purchase history. You should also be able to download and install any apps previously purchased from the Appstore on up to 5 devices (if you are using the same Apple ID).

Comment restaurer Achats

Come ripristinare Acquisti

Please check that you don’t have the mute button switched on. It’s either a switch on the side of the iPad or a button in the multi-task tray. To access the multi-task tray double click on the home button and swipe all the way to the left and you’ll see it.

There are number of powerful features in the Futaba application which are covered in this article, including step by step instructions for using Dropbox and iTunes Documents to create your own custom learning sets to fit your own lesson plans or curriculum.

How to sync with Dropbox and back up your learning sets:

One of the great benefits of Futaba is that users can add their own learning sets to play in the game and back them up to Dropbox. Teachers can propagate this backup to all students in the classroom by creating a Dropbox account and allowing all students access to that account as the restore point for their iPads. After creating a learning set the process is simple:

1) Go to the Settings of Futaba and tap ‘Backup’.

2) Tap ‘Create backup now’ and the backup will take a short moment. Your backup will be conveniently placed under ‘Restore’ on the right side pane of Futaba’s settings.

3) Tap Sync with Dropbox and if you don’t have an account with Futaba, you’ll have to sign up for an account with Dropbox. Select ‘Create account’ on the Dropbox window that appears and on the next screen fill in your personal details. If you don’t have a Dropbox account you can create one here.

4) Next select ‘Sync with Dropbox’ once more and a copy of your backup learning set will be uploaded to a folder named Futaba in your Dropbox account.

5) ( If you would like to load your backup onto any iPad where it doesn’t exist such as a new iPad or a clean slate iPad in your classroom, First have the user of the iPad sign into the Dropbox account that holds the backup. and then tap the FutabaBackup.fgz file under restore. The backed up learning set will appear on other iPads automatically after they have completed step 4 by ‘Syncing with Dropbox’.

6) You are able to make multiple backups of your learning sets to Dropbox. If you wish to access any backups of yours that you had synced with Dropbox previously, simply touch ‘Sync with Dropbox’ and restore that file that you need.

How to make basic vocabulary flashcards for the Futaba app using Keynote on a Mac.

Keynote comes bundled with a purchase of iWork on a Mac and is a very useful tool for creating vivid flashcards for your classes. One of the merits of Futaba is that it uses images to teach with but using Futaba to review vocabulary words may be of benefit to some teachers. You are able to save each vocabulary card as an image file for use in Futaba.

Please consider the following method for creating content for your learning sets. A similar method is possible via Pages but this how to will focus exclusively on using Keynote. You can follow roughly the same procedure on Power Point if you are using Windows.

These vocabulary cards can be used in your language classes and other classes as well.

1) First open Keynote and notice you are presented with a Theme Chooser. Let’s choose the ‘Watercolor’ theme. Scroll down, select it and click choose.

2) Let’s make the total number of cards we’ll need for our learning set by copying and pasting the initial frame

3) In this case let’s make some language cards and in the field where it says “Double-click to edit” let’s type in the word for ‘cat’ in Japanese. If you’d like, you can adjust the number and location of text fields, font sizes and types here.

4) Once you have made all of your cards you can conveniently export them as .png files for use as a language review activity for your children or students in Futaba!

File>Export> select ‘Images’ > Next > New Folder (Give it a name!) Create >Export.

5) Now you’ve got a folder with your learning set. Drag and drop it into the Albums pane of iPhoto and you’re ready to seamlessly sync that folder with your iPad (or add to your “Futaba” folder in Dropbox if you have a Dropbox account).

6) After syncing the iPhoto folder with the iPad you’ll be ready to import each vocabulary word .png file into your learning set by the Add/Edit Content button in Futaba’s Game Content Pane.
